Propped against the churchyard wall is a large stone with the initials M L and the date 1821. This seems to be another monument to Martha Lines, but is too large to be a footstone. Perhaps it was the original headstone for Martha Lines when she died, and it was then replaced with the more elaborate stone above when her son Bartlet died.

There is a corresponding entry in the parish records for a Mary Manning, buried March 17th, 1740, aged 46. She is described as a maiden gentlewoman, so would have been unmarried and of high status, so we can infer her family was likely of the gentry or aristocracy. |
